Our first project looks at concerns around machine gambling, both on the high street and online.
It takes as a case study a particular type of machine called a Fixed Odds Betting Machine. These can be found in bookmakers. We look at this subject in particular because it has aroused intense controversy. Our site Beat the Fix examines the controversy and in so doing explores psychology, machine design, addiction, industry, the mainstream media, politics, business and, not least, some basic similarities between hard gambling and our evryday use of digital devices.
The case study involves many areas of education so we hope it may be of particular use to teachers and others working with young people. Much of what appears in the first project is directly relevant to the potential dangers of online gambling and other possibly risky online interactions.
It is also hoped that the project may also help people at risk or already victims of risky behaviour by providing information and knowledge.
